I started my journalism career back in the days when technology was still a mystery to a lot of people and having a 56Kbps modem was "cool."
I started writing for Metropolitan Computer Times (MCT), a trade publication focusing on information and communication technology (ICT) news in 1996, before joining INQ7.net (which became Inquirer.net) in 2000.
I used to write for the Manila Bulletin and the Philippine Daily Inquirer as a technology news correspondent, before working full-time as desk editor for business and concurrent technology editor for the Manila Times.
Aside from editing assignments, I also juggled a few other online projects working as an online subeditor for Hong Kong-based Telecom Asia, and writer/columnist for Singapore-based ZDNETAsia.
For about a year (from 2009 to 2010), I worked in Saudi Arabia as a technical writer and editor, before returning to Manila to work as a content editor for Manila-based Filquest Multimedia Inc. (owner of Loqal.ph).
In 2014, I headed to Saipan, in the Commonwealth of the Marianas Islands, a US territory to work for a community newspaper. I eventually returned home in 2015 to work as a consultant for a multilateral development organization, while still working on a few writing projects.
Currently, I work as a desk editor a Manila-based newspaper and I also contribute news stories to Newsbytes.ph from time to time.
A few years ago, I decided to go into photography as a hobby. At the same time, I set up The Lighter Photography Blog (https://joeldpfiles.wixsite.com/lightersidephotoblog/home), as my portfolio website, and the Lighter Side Photography (https://www.facebook.com/lightersidephotography/?modal=admin_todo_tour), a portfolio Facebook page.
The times have indeed changed. I decided to revive this blog to share with you news, musings, travel stories, technology reviews, etc. which I hope you will find useful.
